A sewage backup happens when wastewater has nowhere to go and flows back into a property through toilets, tubs or floor drains. Because that water is classed as Category 3 (black) water and can carry bacteria and other pathogens, sewage backup cleanup is a very different job from drying out a clean-water leak.
For homes and businesses in Saint Louis, MO, professional cleanup typically means removing the contaminated water, taking out porous materials that cannot be reliably sanitized, such as carpet, padding and saturated drywall, then cleaning, disinfecting and drying the affected area. If a blocked or damaged sewer line caused the backup, the source also has to be dealt with so the problem does not return.
Speed matters after a backup. The longer contaminated water sits, the deeper it soaks into flooring, wall cavities and belongings, and the harder it becomes to clean the space completely. Until help arrives, keep people and pets out of the affected area, avoid touching the water, and stop using sinks, toilets and appliances that drain into the same line so more wastewater does not enter the building.
It also helps to document the damage before cleanup begins. Photos and notes of the affected rooms, damaged belongings and standing water make an insurance claim easier to support, and many homeowners policies only cover sewer or drain backup with an added endorsement, so it is worth checking your policy early. Property owners in Saint Louis, MO can use that record to discuss coverage with their insurer while the cleanup moves forward.
